Star wars: a history.

In 1977 a film exploded onto the screens and changed the way we felt about going to the movies forever. 'Star Wars: A New Hope' was that movie, and even though it wasn't critically acclaimed the fans loved it.

It was quickly followed by 'The Empire Strikes Back' in 1980 and 'Return of the Jedi' in 1983.

Many people wondered why these movies were so loved? It wasn't as if George was telling an original story. But I think that is why they are so well thought of. George Lucas (writer, director, producer and all round genius, IMO) delved heavily into the myths and legends of every culture he could think of and melded them together with his childhood love of serial adventures. Add in ground breaking special effects (who alone have changed the face of movie making) and George's personal integrity and desire to never see his vision tarnished and we have a phenomenon in the making.

Sixteen years later - the 'wilderness years' as some fans have called them - and the Star Wars universe was re-born in the form of the first of three prequels 'The Phantom Menace'. If the original trilogy was the redemption of Darth Vader then these new three were going to show his downfall.

The fan anticipation was overwhelming and proved once and for all that a story may come and go but a legend never dies.

May the Force be with you!
